Vinyasa Essentials

What is a vinyasa?

The word vinyasa comes from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. It means "to move in a special way" or "to place in a special way”. Vinyasas are a smooth transition between poses, often with the movement paired with the breath.

This class is designed to help you build a strong foundation in vinyasa yoga. We will start by learning the classic movements of the Sun Salutations, and then we will practice executing them with proper form and alignment. We will also learn how to transition through the Sun Salutations to link movement and poses with fluidity. Begin to build confidence in your ability to build vinyasa in your practice.

This class is a perfect prequel to Thursday's Vigorous Vinyasa Flow class at 5:35 pm.

Benefits of taking this class:

  • Learn the fundamentals of vinyasa yoga
  • Improve your balance and coordination
  • Increase your flexibility and strength
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve your overall health and well-being

What to bring:

  • Yoga mat
  • Water bottle
  • Comfortable clothing

No experience is necessary. Those with more experience will benefit from deeper instruction to advanced poses in their vinyasa flow.

Vinyasa 1 & 2 Series

Vinyasa 1 & 2 Series

***AVAILABLE ONLINE/VIRTUAL***

Vinyasa 1

Vinyasa translates as ‘movement’ or ‘flow’. The traditional Vinyasa movement uses the sequencing of plank/chaturanga, cobra/upward facing dog and downward facing dog- to link postures together. This builds up heat in the body and is part of burning through our samskaras (mental and physical scarring or habits).

Class begins with warming postures and Pranayama (breathing); then moves into the Vinyasa sequences including standing postures, twists, hip openers, and back bending postures.
Class concludes with unwinding postures, gentle/supported inversions and Savasana (corpse pose).

Vinyasa 2

This class is very loosely based on the Ashtanga Half Primary series. We will practice up to Navasana.

There will be a Vinyasa between each pose rather than after each side in the seated postures. There will be 1-2 variations of Janu Sirsasana and Marichyasana rather than the 3-4 variations.

Class will conclude with a modified back bend (or full Urdhva Dhanurasana, if accessible for your body), Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) or Bridge pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana), Savasana and a shortened closing chant.

Level: Beginner to Intermediate (All levels, all ages welcome)

After a near death experience while serving in the U.S. army military police corp., Jim realized a calling to help heal and enlighten others to their ability to self-heal. Jim Red Sky’s energy work training began formally in the 1970s after his initiation into Shamanism and through the teachings of his mentor Tiger Kim Li, an energy worker & martial arts expert who came to the U.S. from the Republic of Korea. In the years that followed, Jim co-founded a spiritual/healing drum circle which he facilitated for over a decade.

In 2005, Jim received his Reiki Master attunement & certifications in the Usui method through Dr. Jim Greenwood with completion of Reiki levels I, II & III. Over the years, Jim received training in sound therapy techniques through local energy workers and course work of Dr. John Beaulieu N.D., Ph.D.- naturopathic doctor and music therapist, along with materials from author/energy worker Ted Andrews and others. Jim Red Sky completed Bardic, Ovate, and Druid training/energy healing work through a Druid Order. Learning more about the mind, body, spirit connection it becomes evident that energy & vibrational healing can be a valuable tool in complimenting traditional Western medicine. The hope is to take positive steps towards the wellness of our whole while having a hand in the wellbeing of the individual.

Red Sky has taught spiritual, trance and meditative drumming, in addition to using sound to help relieve stress & assist in clearing blockages in the body’s energy centers. He also employs other ancient sacred healing techniques. Jim resides in Hernando County Florida.

Bringing Sound Bath Meditations using Singing Crystal Bowls, Gongs, Chimes, Medicine Drum & more for peace, healing & well-being throughout the West Central Florida area for over 17 years is an honor and privilege Jim takes very seriously.
